Some celebrity couples seem so perfectly matched you can tell they belong together. On the other hand, some celebrity pairings are so bizarre that it was a collective shock when they got married. Let’s look back at some of those unconventional pairings over the years.
1. Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer

Legendary actress and style icon Audrey Hepburn married actor Mel Ferrer in a secret ceremony in Switzerland in 1954. It was Hepburn’s first and Ferrer’s fifth marriage, making them a mismatched couple. After 14 years of marriage, they divorced in 1968.
2. Marilyn Monroe & Joe DiMaggio

At the time of their private 1954 wedding, Marilyn Monroe was one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world, and Joe DiMaggio was a celebrated professional baseball player. The marriage only lasted for a year before the famed duo split up. Despite their divorce, they remained on good terms for the rest of Monroe’s life.
3. Cher and Gregg Allman

Four days after her divorce from Sonny Bono was finalized, singer and actress Cher married musician Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band. Cher filed for divorce from Allman nine days after the marriage, but they reconciled several weeks later. They had a son the following year and parted ways for good in 1977.
4. Mimi Rogers and Tom Cruise

1980s actress Mimi Rogers and actor Tom Cruise were married in 1987. At the time, their marriage was a surprise because Cruise was a member of the Brat Pack, while Rogers was six years older than him. It was also rumored that she introduced him to Scientology. They separated in 1989 and officially ended their marriage in 1990.
5. Uma Thurman and Gary Oldman

Another May-December marriage that turned heads was the 1990 union of actress Uma Thurman and fellow actor Gary Oldman. At the time, Thurman was 20, and Oldman was 32 and already divorced. The marriage didn’t last long, as they divorced in 1992. Thurman went on to marry actor Ethan Hawke in 1998, but they divorced in 2005. Oldman has since remarried three more times.
6. Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere

A third unsuccessful and surprising May-December marriage was that of supermodel Cindy Crawford and actor Richard Gere, who was 17 years her senior when they wed in 1991. Intense media scrutiny of their marriage proved unsustainable, and they ended things in 1995.
7. Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett

One of the most shocking marriages of the 20th century was the surprise 1993 wedding between A-list actress Julia Roberts and country singer Lyle Lovett. It surprised people because no one knew they even knew each other, much less dating. The match wasn’t meant to be, as they went their separate ways less than two years later.
8. Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson

In 1994, less than three weeks after ending her first marriage, singer Lisa Marie Presley married the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. They divorced after a tumultuous two years together. Sadly, both ended up dying prematurely, with Jackson passing away in 2009 and Presley in early 2023.
