Weddings, by nature, are meant to be joyous and fun-filled events. With careful planning, the happy couple, the wedding party, and every guest should have a great time. Traditional weddings are beautiful, but if you want something different and creative, why not incorporate a theme from a favorite movie or television show?

Let’s explore ten unique wedding themes that will make a lasting impression.

1. Star Wars

A once a niche part of nerd culture, the appeal of Star Wars is now undeniably mainstream. That being said, only the biggest fans will want a wedding inspired by a galaxy far, far away. But for all involved, it would surely be a spectacular event. The possibilities are vast indeed.

Wedding invitations could be in your native language plus the Star Wars language Aurebesh. “The Wedding March” could be replaced with the love theme “Across the Stars,” and the officiant could be dressed as a Jedi. You can have lightsabers at the wedding reception, creating a colorful dance floor.

Take inspiration for the food from Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland, and give little figures or plushes as favors. And the wedding party and couple could adorn inspired fashion, from fun socks to a Padmé inspired wedding gown to wedding rings that say “I love you” and “I know.”

2. Alice in Wonderland

An Alice in Wonderland-inspired wedding would be a beautifully whimsical one. While there are many ways to take this theme, having a venue with immaculate gardens, hedge mazes, or topiaries would create an incredible ambiance and make for gorgeous photos.

Your décor should include iconic imagery from the stories. Hanging lanterns everywhere would be especially lovely. The flowers would have to be red and white roses, and the tables could have playing cards, colorful glass bottles that say “Drink me,” and an array of teacups and teapots.

The theming would be complete by incorporating white rabbits, flamingos, and chess pieces. The key to an Alice in Wonderland wedding is to be eclectic and fanciful.

3. Tim Burton Movies

Director Tim Burton employs a distinct visual style in his equally whimsical and macabre films. Theming a wedding to some of Burton’s movies is perfect for couples who love his films and want their wedding to have a less traditional but still beautiful feel.

The best movies to take inspiration from are Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, and Big Fish. The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride are fantastic sources of inspiration if you love Halloween.

From a non-traditional black or striped dress to Victorian suits and lacy bridesmaid gowns, Burton-esque wedding fashion would be gorgeously gothic. Other lovely options include ice sculptures and topiaries akin to Edward’s creations, lots of yellow flowers like in Big Fish, and a forest or dark mansion for a venue.

4. Disney Princess Movies

Disney fairy tale weddings are for the most enthusiastic and wealthy fans. Still, it’s possible to have a wedding themed to your favorite Disney movie that is more affordable. There are terrific possibilities, whether you go the simpler or more elaborate route.

A Cinderella theme is the most traditional and elegant and could incorporate pumpkin coaches and glass slippers. If you love Beauty and the Beast, the bridesmaids could wear soft yellow gowns, and the tables could include roses under glass cloches.

At a Tangled-inspired wedding, lavender would be the ideal color scheme, and floating lanterns are a must. And you could always incorporate several films, with each table designated to a specific princess.

5. Lord of the Rings

Lord of the Rings is an incredibly inspiring film series for weddings. These ceremonies and receptions resemble Renaissance fairs but could be even more lovely and magical. It’s only natural to look at Hobbiton and Rivendell for ideas for the venue and décor.

Howard Shore’s score would provide beautiful accompaniment for the ceremony. Elvish could be on invitations and signs; the tablescapes could be very rustic, natural, and ornate, with lots of greenery, flowers, and silver goblets.

The wedding party could wear gold rings or necklaces like Arwen’s Elven pendant, and velvet capes and long white veils with floral appliqué would be gorgeous. Lastly, if possible, pull a Gandalf and impress guests with fireworks.

6. Downton Abbey

The Downton Abbey series and films span from 1912 to the late 1920s and are rife with beautiful possibilities for a wedding. What’s nice is that it would incorporate very traditional elements we see today but with uniquely old-fashioned touches. Those who love the era would no doubt delight in the aesthetics.

A venue could be an English garden or a beautiful manor. Depending on the Downton era you’re taking inspiration from, the attire could be elegant, Edwardian suits and simple gowns or more flashy and glitzy 1920s tweed suits and flapper gowns. The reception should have strings of lights, elegant and delicate china, a Victrola, or a string quartet. This wedding theme is one of the prettiest and easiest to accomplish.

7. Harry Potter

A Harry Potter-themed wedding has magical possibilities. You can incorporate the entire wizarding world with touches of Hogwarts, all the houses, and various other locations such as Hogsmeade. If it were me, I would include my house, Hufflepuff, and whatever house my groom is in. This creates a simpler color scheme.

In terms of music, John Williams’ “Hedwig’s Theme” and “Fawkes the Phoenix,” and Patrick Doyle’s “Harry in Winter” and “Potter Waltz” are the most appropriate. The tables could look like the Hogwarts Great Hall with large goblets and many candles.

And light up wands are the perfect favors. How beautiful would it be to have each guest hold up their lit wands before a toast or in a long line as the couple departs? And, of course, one should also give each guest a chocolate frog and a box of Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans.

8. Classic Hollywood

As an avid fan of classic movies, the concept of a wedding inspired by old Hollywood is thrilling. What’s fantastic is that there are so many routes one could take. You could be glitzy and glamorous as if your wedding is a red carpet event, or choose a simpler and humbler path inspired by old-school movie theaters. Or there’s the option of looking at specific films as a jumping-off point.

The aisle could be a red carpet, and the invitations and décor might be vintage movie reels, cameras, and slates. The music could be classic movie scores, and each table could be themed to a different film. You could have Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s tables. There are endless possibilities.

9. Winnie the Pooh

One of the sweetest themes for a wedding would be Winnie the Pooh. It’s only natural that this event would be outdoors in a place reminiscent of the 100-acre Woods. Invitations would include the characters in subtle ways, and plushes of the characters would have to be incorporated.

Colors such as soft yellows, pinks, and grays are ideal. Quotations from the books could be on each table, along with beautiful hardback editions. And you could give mason jars of fresh honey as favors to guests.

10. Pirates of the Caribbean

Couples dressed as Pirate

Avast ye mateys, thar be no wedding theme as grand and fun as Pirates of the Caribbean. While you should never require guests to dress up in costumes to attend, pirate garb is fun, and the suggestion could remain. The couple could choose pirate-like attire or wear elegant gowns and long coats.

For the music, without a doubt, a lovely version of Hans Zimmer’s “One Day” is the perfect song for the walk down the aisle. And for the walk back up, what’s better than the rousing main Pirates theme?

The venue and décor would be a fun treasure trove of wondrous options. The beach feels like the most natural setting. And tables could have miniature ships and treasure chests filled with jewels and gold coins of the chocolate variety. And if you still want elegant touches, one needs to look no further than dinnerware that is 17th-century inspired. The only question remains: will a Jack Sparrow be your officiant?
